It would not seem beneficial to sell an item that you don’t have, but in the drop ship industry, it’s done on a daily basis. What’s more is that people are actually making money from selling items they don’t have. This is the art of drop shipping, and when it comes to starting an ebay business with little capital, drop shipping may be your ticket to a home based business.
As with any business drop shipping requires work. You will read much around the internet about making millions overnight, and believe it or not, drop shipping is one of their claims. But the important thing to remember is that hard work pays off, and nothing comes for free. At least in my case, nothing comes for free.
In the world of drop shipping, there are many pitfalls and road blocks. But with some research and carefully planned business tactics, you can get through them. The following list is some things to look for when starting a drop ship business.
Research Your Dropship Products
I can’t say enough about this. I think hands down, this is the largest pitfall most newcomers to drop shipping face. If the item you want to sell isn’t selling, odds are, you’ll will not be able to sell it either.
Cost Benefit Margin
It’s always best to figure an approximate range your profit will be in. Take for example the item you will be purchasing using drop ship service is $10. Items like this are selling for $12 to $15. But only 1 of 3 items like this is selling or even has bids on them. Now figure your cost for auction fees for 3 items. Remember, by using what others are selling is around what yours will sell for. Add in closing costs and final price fees, etc. And your profit will only be about one or two bucks. Hardly worth the effort unless the item is small and you can move many of these items in a short time.
Reputable Drop Shipper
Be sure to do business with a reputable drop shipper. Inquire about the company’s physical stock and be sure they can handle the drop ship orders in a timely manner.
With each drop ship company, you’ll run into problems. Just like in any business venture there are risks and pitfalls. Many drop ship companies may allow you to place holds on items and has user forums to discuss drop shipping with other sellers. I would urge you to review these forums and ask questions about the drop ship company before doing any business with them.
